Much has been made of Obama’s need to appear alongside foreign leaders as a way to usher more Americans into viewing him as commander in chief material. But it’s clear that Sarkozy, Abdullah and others wanted just as much to be seen with him. Wildly popular in most of the countries he visited, Obama was simply good politics for them.
